The marsh was still. Puddles lay dormant and undisturbed in the dense dark. The moon was full, yet its light could not penetrate the rotting trees of Shadowclan. Mosquitoes hovered restlessly above the water, humming their quiet, droning song. A large figure sat still as stone infront of one of these puddles. He was gazing at his reflection, pondering his life. Young and reserved, Coarsepaw had few friends. Life was hard for someone like him, and the fact that he was compassionate and sensitive to other's feelings surely did not help him to fit in any better in his clan. Sighing sadly, the shy tom wondered if he'd ever be happy. Sure, he was content. Fine with being an apprentice. Fine with the food he ate. Fine just going through the motions. But he wasn't happy. Shadowclan cats aren't ment to be happy, he thought gloomily. But the tom's romantic outlook on life gave him something he knew he shouldn't have. It gave him hope.
