"Why?" she could not see a reason in this..

"Well," she replied, thinking, "there really isn't a reason. It's just out of respect that we wait until Bramblestar thinks it's appropriate to go down." Sleekstep started to ascend the gentle slope, small paws easily carrying her up. "Come on, let's go see the owl tree. If you're lucky, that monster won't be around," she called over her shoulder as she reached the top.

"Yes. That bird will carry away defenseless kits...if it has the chance." she said once she reached the top. Flicking her tail, she signaled for Poppypaw to follow.

"Is that what it eats all the time, and does that explain why kits go missing?" Poppypaw was horrified at the thought!

As Sleekstep lead the way to the enormous owl tree, she said, "No. Owls eat a lot of the same things we do, like mice, rabbits, and vole, but they don't digest them as well and so in their pelets you can find animal bones. Sometimes they're the reason kits disappear, but not always. In life, things just...happen." She finished with a sigh, knowing that some accidencts and tragedies are just that. They aren't anyone's fault. The tree loomed ominously in her keen sight, and she haulted, waiting for her apprentice to catch up.

Poppypaw looked sullen at this thought and suddenly thought of the fact that she was tired and needed a rest. "Sleekstep, I'm tired.." Poppypaw didn't want to sound spoilt in front of her new mentor, but she was starting to weaken at the knees and all the experiences of the day had worn her out so.

Sleekstep suddenly felt quilty. She thought she must not have been paying enough attention to her apprentice throughout all he explanations because she hadn't noticed the steady weariness entering her young paws. Now, as she watched Poppypaw, she could see the young cat's endurance had reached its limit. Sitting down decidely in the decaying leaves at the base of the owl tree, she said , "Why don't we rest a while then? When you get some of your strength back, we can start heading for camp." A soft hoot floated through the trees and reverberated in Sleekstep's large, black ears. Looking swiftly to the skies, she was worried the owl might try something with the tired apprentice. She had nothing to fear, however, as the owl meerly circled the tree and went off in another direction. Apperently it didn't like the fact that two creatures with sharp talons were resting under its roost.
