Autumnkit pounced on a leaf, imagining it was a piece of prey or a feisty Shadowclan warrior. She hissed and spit, fur standing up and eyes glaring. At her mother's chuckle, she whipped around to see the beautiful white she-cat awake and watching her. She blushed, her tail twitching. "I can't wait to be an apprentice, mama," she meowed excitedly as an explanation for her behavior. She padded over to her mother, laying down in her warm belly and letting her soothing tongue relax her.
Swiftcloud brushed her tongue over her young kit, only 4 moons old and so feisty already. She smiled at her daughter's remark about being an apprentice, remembering her own eagerness as a young kit. Deciding Autumnkit's fur was clean enough, she meowed to her gently. "Autumnkit, you'll be an apprentice in time. Don't be in a hurry to leave the nursery. Yes, being an apprentice as well as a warrior is a high honor and something to dream about. But just think of all the new responsibilities you'll have. You won't have time to frolic with your brothers anymore, because you'll be training, or hunting. And you'll be scolded constantly until you get things right. Enjoy being a kit while it lasts, darling, because it doesn't last long. You've got the rest of your life to be a warrior. You only have a few moons to be a kit."
Autumnkit nodded, amazed at her mother's logic as she drifted off into sleep, her dreams now of teaching kits of her own in the far future.
