A soft, cold wind blew through the trees, rustling their dying leaves. Pelts shivered and bodies twitched in restless sleep. Quiet snores exposed those who didn't feel the icy breeze. Fog, thin and mist-like, covered the dewy ground. Rolling onto his large paws, the young apprentice, Coarsepaw, awoke in the early morning light. He felt heavy with a light coat of water covering his thick fur but remembered the sleeping bodies all around him. Padding quietly to the entrace of the small den, he only shook the dampness from his coarse fur once he was outside. Small droplets showered the ground as he did so. Settling down to groom himself, Coarsepaw listened to the hush of the marsh. He wasn't very cold, even though he knew he should be. Being blessed with unusually think fur ment he didn't experience the piercing uncomfortableness of winter. Not many were up, he could hear a rustle here and smelt a fresh scent there, but camp was quiet. The young apprentice had always been a late riser since kittenhood, but lately he just couldn't sleep once the sun rose. It was like the bright orb called to him to come out and bask in its glow, if only to keep the lonely star company. Yawning widely, he stood and headed for the fresh kill pile. As he pulled his breakfast to the driest spot he could find, Coarsepaw began to think. His heart beat with excitement as he thought of training cesions with his new mentor, Jadeeyes. Smiling between munches of his small rabbit, he envisioned his first gathering. With one last gulp, he finished his breakfast and wondered what to do. Laying his furry head on his paws, he stretched out on the chilly ground.

Jade eyes appeared through the mist, a lithe black form returning from the shadows. The she-cat named Jadeeyes appeared behind her new apprentice, Coarsepaw. All of her previous apprentices had run off... never to return. But this time would be different, Jadeeyes was sure. "Shall we leave?" She asked mono tone, most likely startling the unknowing apprentice with her words.

Coarsepaw, deeply relaxed, twitched in suprise at his mentor's emtionless call. "Um, good morning, Jadeeyes." he said, quickly rising to hit feet. The young cat was a bit nervous, he didn't know this formidable cat very well, but really hoped they'd become close. Bright, yellow eyes shining in the dark morning, Coarsepaw straightened to his full height in an attempt to look confident before saying, "Whenever you want, I'm ready." Despite his immense desire to impress his new mentor, the largest part of his personality shone through as he bathed her in that warm Coarsepaw smile.

Jadeeyes struggled to grin back, he reminded her so much of Virtuouskit... her dear kit who was killed by a hawk. And now her handicapped kit would never become somethin big... because of his eyes. Jadeeyes had been thinking of abandoning her kit by Windclan, and having Moondance take him away... she would teach him how to be blind... But now she had a responsibility, and she layed down next to her eating apprntice. "I can wait for you to eat." she told him, having alread eaten herself.

Coarsepaw nodded eagerly. Swallowing the last bit of his meal, he turned towards her and said, "What are we going to do today?" The young tom really thought he'd like to learn to hunt. As a kit, he'd always practiced stalking his brothers and sisters in the shadows, waiting till they strayed to far from mom before pouncing. He wondered naively if hunting actual prey would be that easy.
