Plot: Quite a long time has passed since Eragon defeated Galbatorix and renewed the Riders—a hundred years, in fact. Since then, Alagaësia has never been the same.
Eragon's gift from the dragons had been more than he had thought it had. Not only had it practically turned him into an elf, it changed things in ways he could never have expected. Murtaugh and Thorn had been completely unaffected. The same went for Galbatorix and Shruikan, Oromis and Glaedr, Aurora and Eridor, even he and Saphira were relatively unaffected. But when one of his students got into a fight with a gang of bandits on one of their bandit-control missions, they had begun to overwhelm the Rider. Eragon had fought to reach the young human man, but getting there in time was impossible. The younger Rider had dropped his sword and, acting on instinct, made a violent slashing movement with both hands as if to strike his surrounding opponents. Flame shot from his hands and engulfed them all. Seeing this powerful "magic" sent the entire camp scrambling to escape.
When Eragon saw that his student had not fallen unconscious with the energy drain, he was very surprised. Upon a search of the young Rider's mind, he found there were five barriers in his mind, four so much weaker than the fifth that the student could have easily accessed them with no more effort than a flick of his mind—they couldn't have done much but merely prevented him from using whatever they contained unintentionally. The stronger one was clearly magic, it had the same 'texture', if that was the word for it. But the other four were different—one hot, another frigid, the third like a thin layer of sand, and the last like very humid air.
Over time, the other new Riders displayed similar abilities—a young boy no more than twelve skyrocketed into the air with a sneeze; a girl of around seventeen stomped the ground in anger and a boulder flew out of it, and a man well into his twenties turned a small stream to ice with a flick of his hand.
Similar cases began to spring up all across Alagaësia. A young girl born with some slight magical ability defended her home—her sick father inside and unable to help—from bandits with an amazing display of fireballs sent flying at her attackers. A fifteen year old boy out hunting with his father took down a deer by throwing a pebble at its skull from fifty yards away with all the speed of magic—and with none involved. Things like this occurred in both the elven and human societies.
Eventually, this phenomenon came to be referred to as Waterbending, Earthbending, Firebending, and Airbending. It was identified as a genetic trait—two of the children of the young girl with the amazing Firebending skills—a prodigy, if you will—were also Firebenders, the other two were normal humans. It was also discovered that the Riders were capable of bending all four elements. It was quickly realized this it affected the dragons as well—some could not breathe fire, but frigid air instead. Others had difficulty withstanding cold climates. Still others were able to fly twice as well as most dragons. So the dragons were divided into four subspecies—Water Dragons, Earth Dragons, Fire Dragons, and Air Dragons.
In time, Eragon left with all the other Riders, leaving only twenty eggs behind in the care of an elf on Vroengard.
While the eggs remained stubbornly dormant, small battles between the Benders broke out—the four different types of Bender wanted their own countries. While the king had decided to permit the splitting of Alagaësia into four nations, there was still the dispute over territory. After avery long campaign, the territories were decided. The Water Tribes controlled all of the islands except Vroengard, The Fire Nation had what had once been Surda, the Air Nomads got the Spine and the Beors, and the Earth Kingdom controlled everything else, except for Vroengard. Vroengard is a no-man's-land, the operating base for the neutral Riders, who keep peace between the nations. None of the nations is comprised entirely of Benders.
