Thistleclaw leapt over a fallen log, and then stopped, panting. He had won the race between him and Ashpaw, but the apprentice had been surprisingly fast! He jumped ontop of the log, waving his tail to signal to Ashpaw. "Over hear," he meowed loudly.

Ashpaw felt relieved that some of her overwhelming energy had been let go. she herd Thistleclaw yell 'over hear!' to her so she followed it and found herself at a large fallen log. Panting she slowed her pace to a stop and stared up to her mentor with a large smile covering her face. She quickly and clumsily leapt up to stand beside him. She laughed as she waited, catching her breath, for further direction.

"We are now at the border with WindClan," meowed to Ashpaw, turning to face the vast green moores that lay to their right. "Now tell me, what do you smell? Does it smell different from when we were in the heart of our own territory?"

Ashpaw opened her mouth and took in a deep silent breath of the scented air. " I smell other cats!" She exclaimed with a shiver running up and down her spine. This sent was unfamiliar and didn’t seem as friendly and welcoming as her own.” I don’t like it." she said with a glance across the border. "The sent of Thunderclan is stronger ware we used to be!" she said answering the question with pride and then adding in with an edge of competition towards the other clan, "Thunderclan smells better."

"Just wait unitl you smell ShadowClan scent," laughed Thistlepaw, wrinkling his nose. Then, more serriosly, he meowed, "Ashpaw, the scent you can smell now is WindClan. Learn it well, so if you meet a cat with this smell, you will know that it is WindClan. Another very important reson to know the scents of the other Clans is so that you don't cross the Clan borders accidentily. You can get in a whole lot of trouble for crossing into another Clans territory without permission. It's a major violation of the Warrior Code."

"ok Thistleclaw" said ashpaw in a solem tone. she took in a coupel more wifs of air until she had it memorized. "I think I know it now" she exclaimed with confidence. "ware are we going next?" she said exitedly.

Ashpaw was delighted when she was told that she was alowed to choose there next destination. she wrinkled her nose as she thought of Shadowclan and what Thistleclaw had said about there sent, and grinned. "Shadowclan!" she blurted out impulsively. But she liked her decision. To her Shadowclan was mysterious and when she thought of the name , in her head she would say 'Shahddowclaaannnn' very coolly . As she was saying it to herself, she accidentally said it out loud. "shadowclaannn" and then realizing that she had said it out loud, became a little embarrassed.

"What?" meowed Thistleclaw, giving his apprentice a confused look. "Well, I can see that you're eager to see the ShadowClan border, so let's go," he meowed, leaping off the log.

Ashpaw was relived that her mentor didn’t catch her mistake and didn’t see her embarrassment. She leapt down off the log in pursuit of her mentor .in truth , she was quite exited to see the Shadowclan border

As Thistleclaw led Ashpaw through the forest towards the marshy ShadowClan territory, he noticed a mouse scrabbling around at the foot of a tree. He stopped, as put his tail over Ashpaw's mouth, showing her to be still. Then, he cocked his head in the direction of the mouse, a question in his eyes. "Why don't you try to catch it?"

Ashpaw froze as she felt Thistleclaw tail wisp bye her mouth. she was brimming with excitement when he emplyed that she should try to catch it but she dared not say a word and give away there presents. She dropped into a clumsy makeshift hunters crouch, basing it on what she had observed from other warriors. As she stalked it ,it was suddenly aware of her and began to scurry. Frozen with dread, Ashpaw took off after it , clawing at the ground as she continually missed it. the chase did not last long, the mouse found a hole and darted in leaving Ashpaw embarrassed and ashamed. she stood and stared sadly down the whole.

"That's alright," meowed Thistlepaw, seeing how disappointed Ashpaw was. "You did very well, considering that you haven't even had a proper hunting lesson yet. You'll have better luck next time." He went over to stand next to his apprentice, and then continued walking towards the ShadowClan border. He could already faintly smell the reek of the Thunderpath as the approached it.

Ashpaw was reassured by Thistleclaw’s words but, was all the same depressed with herself. She now felt the need to become the best warrior! She would be a great hunter and a great fighter and always honor the warrior code! 'Patients’ she whispered to herself’ it will come in time’. She padded off after Thistleclaw towards the border of Shadowclan.

As Thistleclaw reached the Thunderpath that serarated the ShadowClan ThunderClan territories, a sudden wind buffeted his fur. He crept slowly along, keeping low to the ground, and then poked his head out from behind a bush, surveying the expanse of stinking black pavement that lay ahead of him. Turning to Ashpaw, he meawed "Do you know what that is?" pointing to the Thunderpath. Then, adding a bit sharply "Don't go near it. It's brought many injuries - and death - to cats far better than you and I."
