Rabbitpaw sat alone on a hill just outside of her clan's camp, watching the tall grass below her get blown about in the heavy breeze. She remembered the fall she had taken on this hill not that long ago, and she wasn't eager to repeat the experience. She flicked her ears, listening for any noise to indicate there was prey about, but heard nothing and laid her head back onto her paws. She blinked slowly, relishing in her current freedom to think about her life. She would be a warrior soon, and wouldn't have as much free time.
Her mentor, Hawkclaw, was back at the camp sleeping as well as Bearpaw, her future mate. She knew she was one of the very few WindClan cats awake in these early, early hours...but she couldn't sleep. She was to eager to become a warrior. Her dreams were filled with hunting alongside Bearpaw, raising their kits in the nursery...and she would always wake up when she met Hawkclaw's cold stare. She hadn't wanted to hurt him by choosing Bearpaw, and although he denied it, she knew she had. She sighed again, wishing another cat were around to lean against as shelter from the wind. The sun wasn't hot enough yet to bask as she usually did on a slow day. Maybe if she was lucky, Hawkclaw would wake soon and decide to go on a training patrol. |

Hawkclaw's ears pirked up. He saw a brownish coat in the grass and wondered if it was a rabbit. As he stalked closer he relized that it was not moving like a normal rabbit. He stalked closer and closer until he was in stricking range. Hawkclaw crouched and scented the air, he smelled somthing fammiliar but he ignored it. He lanched in to the air and landed on the back of something much larger than a rabbit.

Rabbitpaw yowled in fright, twisting onto her back to get the attacker off. She jumped up and spun around, fur raised and claws unsheathed, ready to defend herself against him when she noticed it was her mentor.
"Hawkclaw?"
she asked, her voice betraying her shock. She let her fur lay flat and took a few steps toward him. She licked her should, cleaning a scratch before the air could infect it. She watched him, waiting to see if he would need any help getting up. |

Hawkclaw heaved him self up before falling back down in to the grass. He lay there, breathing hard. Then he realized it was Rabbitpaw," I thought you were a Rabbit!" Then he let out a painfull laugh. Hawkclaw closed his eyes as a small breeze swept by, ruffleing his fur.

Rabbitpaw purred in amusement although her eyes showed worry. She padded forward, leaning down and getting a shoulder under her mentor to help him up. Standing beside her and leaning heavily on her, he still looked like a tough warrior. She smiled.
"Where do you want to go, oh mighty rabbit hunter?"
she teased gently, eyes sweeping over him and looking for wounds. |

"Mighty rabbit hunters need a break so I guess i'll see if the medicine cat sees any thing wrong," Hawkclaw meowed. Then he teased," Hopefully I don't have an injury like yours!"

Rabbitpaw laughed freely, her heart aching as she remembered how Bearpaw had left the clan without telling her. She knew he wasn't coming back...it had been almost a whole moon. The way they laughed and teased made her wish she had chosen Hawkclaw, but he would never take her now. She had hurt him. Her smile dissolved as she thought about how much she had hurt her mentor, and her eyes became filled with sadness. She dipped her head, trying to hide her emotions as she started back to camp with Hawkclaw leaning on her. Her fur felt so good with his...she shook her head of the thoughts. He needed her help now, it was the least she could do. |

Hawkclaw looked at his apprentice and saw a sad look on her face. "What is wrong Rabbitpaw?" Then he added,"You can tell me any thing if it is alright with you," he meowed softly. Hawkclaw then put his tail on her back for comfort.

Rabbitpaw picked her head up, eyes shining with unshed tears. She debated whether or not to voice her thoughts...but she had always told everyone everything. Why make this any different?
"I chose Bearpaw over you, and I know I hurt you. I regret it so much. He left me all alone..."
she meowed sadly, letting her tears fall down as she leaned against Hawkclaw and her tail lowered to the ground. |

Rabbitpaw looked at Hawkclaw, confusion evident in her young, shining eyes. Her ears and tail flicked.
"You don't hate me for my decision?"
she meowed curiously. She honestly thought he would be really upset with her...she had just hoped he would keep training her. Maybe they could still be friends! Maybe she hadn't ruined everything... |

"I don't hate you,"Hawkclaw meowed. "I was shocked at first but I relized it was right for you." Then he sighed as he remembered the thoughts he had before,.................................................Hawkclaw padded through the forest, Rabbitpaw, his mate at his side. But Hawkclaw pushed his thoughts out of his head.

Rabbitpaw smiled, relieved at Hawkclaw's revelation. She felt as if a huge weight was lifted off of her shoulders. She leaned forward and licked his cheek, her tongue lingering a few moments longer than necessary. Her tail twined with his, her eyes suddenly bright and beautifully clear as the sun shone on her white and brown fur, making her seem to glow. |

Hawkclaw was surprised at Rabbitpaw's affection but the emotion fadded and turned into delite as he soaked up the affection, just like his coat soaked up the warm rays of the sun. "I love you Rabbitpaw!" A few moments later Hawkclaw was shocked that he just said that out loud.
